Entrepreneurship story- I was part of the Reitz Retail Hatchery. It was a space in the Reitz union where student entrepreneurs could apply, and if they were accepted they could sell their products in the Reitz Union at the old computer lab. The store is still up and running successfully today. It was my first real experience with anything related to entrepreneurship. I worked together with 5 other interns and together we had to do everything related to the store. We first had to figure out how the store would run, who would be in the store and the day to day operations of the store. It was a huge task that we started in January, and we wanted to open the store by the end of January. I was exposed to a lot and learned so much more than I could have learned in a classroom. One thing I learned was the variety of products that students have created and wanted to do as a business. We had everything from a virtual reality simulator to handcrafted jewelry. I also saw how the minds of entrepreneurs worked, and everything was always about the customers and making them happy, while also expanding the market and reaching as many people as possible. Overall it was a great experience and it got me started on the path of thinking about business and wanting to start my own business someday.
From this class, I want to learn about the details of the business and learn all of the common mistakes. By doing this I hope to be more efficient and when I start a company and hopefully it will be more successful.
The picture below is a picture of the inside of the store after it was up and running, showcasing all of the different products and vendors.

Hi Brandon,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading about your experience with entrepreneurship. Although I learned about entrepreneurship from watching someone else, you actually experienced it firsthand. So, it was interesting to read about the process you went through and some of the lessons you learned from your experience. One important lesson you mentioned was the importance of being customer centered. I also liked that you included a picture of the store at the end of your post. It helped me connect your finished product with all the effort that brought it there. Great post!
